The action

Since Monday morning, 19.09.2020 at 05:30, around 40 activists from the „Involuntary Fire Brigade“ (unfreiwillige Feuerwehr) action group have been blockading the Jänschwalde coal-fired power plant in three coordinated actions under the slogan „Switch off Jänschwalde“. One group occupied the coal bunkers on the power plant site and chained themselves to the conveyor belts. At the same time, two other groups interrupted the rail links between the Jänschwalde opencast mine and the power plant with technical blockades. They are protesting against the environmentally destructive continued operation of the Jänschwalde open-cast mine and the climate-destroying consequences of lignite-fired power generation.

Repression

The „Involuntary Fire Brigade“ action group blockaded the Jänschwalde coal-fired power plant in Brandenburg on September 19, 2022. As a result, two blocks of the power plant had to be shut down for several hours. After the blockade was cleared and 30 hours in custody, the Cottbus district court remanded four people who continued to refuse to give their personal details in custody. Two of the detainees were released after they gave their identities.

On Thursday, 17.11.2022, two climate activists from the „Involuntary Fire Brigade“ action group were sentenced to 4 months in prison without probation in a scandalous verdict. The action group had blockaded the Jänschwalde lignite-fired power plant at the end of September, causing two units to be temporarily shut down. The two activists, who call themselves „Ava“ and „Ralph“, were now on trial. They were arrested during the blockade and have been in custody ever since because they refuse to give their identity.

The two are free and the judgment in the Court of Appeal is not yet final, as an appeal has been filed.

More Repression

Letters have come but so far no dates for further court cases yet. 18 other involuntary fire fighters wait for their court dates. Though, we wouldn’t mind if they just forgot about us :).
